United Way Brandon & District recognizes that Truth and Reconciliation is an ongoing and evolving process, and that every interaction between Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous people is an opportunity to advance Truth and Reconciliation. United Way Brandon & District commits to being an organization that meaningfully embeds truth and reconciliation in its work and strives to have robust relations with Indigenous Peoples based on mutual respect, trust and dialogue. 

 Role and Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as an advisory body with respect to Indigenous perspectives on the issues and operations of United Way Brandon and District (UWBD); 

  • Ensure that Indigenous perspectives are meaningfully incorporated into proposed new or modified existing programming, strategy, and policy; 

  • Provide advice concerning the implications of proposed position or policy statements for Indigenous Peoples; 

  • Provide advice, share information and identify strategies to best provide culturally relevant services to Indigenous individuals living in the Brandon and Westman region; 

  • Increase UWBD knowledge about Indigenous communities, the Indigenous communities knowledge about UWBD, and the general public’s knowledge about Indigenous communities; 

  • Build and strengthen relationships between UWBD and individuals and organizations in Indigenous communities; 

  • Generate and propose issues for consideration by the Board of Directors; 

All Indigenous peoples, including First Nation, Inuit and Metis are eligible to apply to be part of the Advisory Council. The Council will consist of 10 – 12 members and include diverse experience and representation such as

  • Regional representation; 

  • Complementary background and expertise in traditional knowledge, local challenges facing Indigenous Peoples, and reconciliation; 

  • Gender; 

  • Age, including youth and elders; 

  • The 2SLGBTQIA+ community 

  • Two positions will be held specifically for knowledge keepers.
